Severance season 3 taps Kogonada to direct

Apple TV+ resets the board as the acclaimed filmmaker steps in to direct the new season.

TL;DR

The fluorescent nightmare of Lumon Industries is getting a new architect. As Severance prepares to shoot its third season this April, Apple TV+ has brought in After Yang director Kogonada to helm most, if not all, of the episodes, replacing Ben Stiller behind the camera.

The creative shakeup isn’t just visual. Beau Willimon, the mind behind the sharpest political tension in Andor, has joined the writing staff. Star Adam Scott confirmed the impending production start, teasing a slate of new characters as the show pushes deeper into the severed consciousness.

Still with us? Good

Bringing Kogonada into the Lumon basement is a masterstroke of tonal alignment. Severance is a show fundamentally about space and symmetry—how corporate architecture physically traps the mind.

Kogonada is an obsessive formalist. His cinematic language is built on precise framing, still cameras, and the quiet tragedy of modern design. Where Stiller infused the first two seasons with a creeping, satirical dread, Kogonada’s eye will likely bring a colder, more melancholic beauty to the macrodata refinement floor.

The addition of Beau Willimon to the writers’ room is equally telling. As the severed employees begin to understand the scale of the conspiracy against them, the show must shift from mystery box to institutional thriller. Willimon understands how to write characters who are crushed by systems they cannot see.

If the first two seasons asked how we divide ourselves, season three—armed with this new creative brain trust—seems poised to ask what it costs to put the pieces back together.
